What happens on the morning of your flight
The single thing nobody is prepared for is how early it starts. One operator publishes its pickup window as "between 4:20 and 5:10 AM depending on your location", with a five-minute grace period. Travellers on Reddit describe being collected at 4:15 and back at their hotel by two in the afternoon. This is not a morning activity. It is the entire day.
- 3:45-4:15 a.m. Your alarm. It is dark and it is cold, and the lobby coffee is not open yet.

This trips people up, so it is worth being blunt. You will not float directly above the Pyramid of the Sun and look down its staircase. Flights launch from fields near San Martín de las Pirámides and drift beside and around the zone, at the mercy of whatever the wind is doing. What you get is the whole valley in one frame: both pyramids, the Avenue of the Dead running between them, the Ciudadela at the far end, and the ring of mountains that made this a place worth building in.
That is arguably better than being overhead. From directly above, a pyramid is a square. From a kilometre off at low altitude with the sun still coming up, you see the alignment, the shadows raking across the terraces, and how deliberately the whole city was laid out.
