Which balloon flight to book: all five compared

Five listings, one sky. They differ on where the van collects you, whether breakfast happens in a cave, whether the pyramids are included or an extra, and how much review history there is to judge them on. Here is the whole picture in one table.

Checked against the operators' live listings, INAH and Mexico's civil aviation authority. How we verify this.

Short answer

Book the Viator "Balloon flight + pick up in CDMX + Breakfast in Cave + Pyramids" unless you have a specific reason not to. It has 7,085 reviews at 4.9, six times the history of anything else on this valley, and it bundles the whole day. Book the GetYourGuide $159 listing instead if you want to strip the day back to the flight alone, and the La Gruta listing if eating inside a volcanic cave is the part you care about.

How to pick, in one question each

Do you want the day handled for you?

Then the Viator flagship. It is the only listing here with a review sample large enough to be genuinely predictive, and the pickup covers the five neighbourhoods most visitors stay in. Its Badge of Excellence and "Trending" flag are Viator's own signals, not ours. Check dates and prices on Viator.

Do you only want the flight?

Then the $159 GetYourGuide listing, with the transport and pyramid options switched off. This is the cheapest way onto a balloon through a platform, and it makes sense if you have a car, or if you are sleeping near the site the night before. Read the getting there guide first, because a 4am taxi from the city can eat the saving. Check dates and prices on GetYourGuide.

Is the cave breakfast the bit you actually want?

Then take the La Gruta listing, and note the distinction: several flights advertise a "cave breakfast", but this is the one that names La Gruta, the restaurant built inside a lava cave beside the zone. Reviews of the generic cave breakfasts are mixed. Reviews of La Gruta itself are not. Check dates and prices on Viator.

Do you have one day in Mexico City and want it all?

Then the Guadalupe combination, with your eyes open. $263 buys the flight, the guided ruins, an obsidian workshop with a tasting, and the Basilica of Guadalupe. It is a genuinely full day and it is also the itinerary most likely to include the workshop stop travellers complain about. Check dates and prices on GetYourGuide.

Are you staying near Reforma and counting pesos?

Then the $223 breakfast-and-transport listing, which collects from the Ángel de la Independencia instead of your hotel door. Twenty-one reviews is a thin record, so this is a bet on the operator rather than on the listing. Amigo Tours LATAM also runs the 1,186-review flight, which is some comfort. Check dates and prices on GetYourGuide.

What none of them include

None of these listings gets you above the Pyramid of the Sun, because balloons here do not fly directly over the zone. None of them can promise a flight time longer than the wind allows. And none of them publishes how often they cancel for weather, which is worth remembering when you read a competitor page quoting a cancellation percentage: nobody has that figure.

What every one of them does carry is free cancellation up to 24 hours before, so booking a date early costs you nothing and holding out for a better price mostly costs you the date. In the December-to-February peak, that matters.

Common questions about choosing

Which Teotihuacan balloon flight has the most reviews?

The Viator listing "Balloon flight + pick up in CDMX + Breakfast in Cave + Pyramids", operated by Tlatoani tours, with 7,085 reviews at 4.9 stars. The next largest is the GetYourGuide listing at 1,186 reviews and 4.6 stars. The other three carry fewer than 50 reviews each, which does not make them bad, only harder to judge.

Is a private balloon basket worth the extra?

Volare publishes 8,500 MXN for a private flight for two against 2,610 to 2,900 MXN for a shared basket, so roughly triple per person. A shared basket at Teotihuacan can hold up to 16 people. What you buy with a private basket is space at the edge, no jostling for photographs, and the ability to propose to someone without an audience. If none of those matter to you, the shared flight sees exactly the same valley.

Do the cheaper flights use worse balloons?

Not in any way you can verify from a listing. Every commercial operator flying here needs an AFAC-licensed pilot and mandatory passenger insurance, which is the same floor for all of them. What the price differences actually reflect is what is bundled: transport from Mexico City, breakfast, zone entry, a guide. A $159 flight and a $263 flight can put you in the same envelope on the same morning.

Can I book the flight and arrange my own transport?

Yes. The GetYourGuide $159 listing sells the flight with transport as an optional extra, and Mexican operators sell flight-only tickets direct from around 1,990 MXN. The catch is arriving at a field in San Martín de las Pirámides by about 6 a.m., which from Mexico City means leaving around 4:30 a.m. by road. It works if you have a car or you stay locally the night before.

Ready to pick a morning?

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before on every listing here, so holding a date while you decide costs nothing.
